: Famous Captain during Revolutionary War. Died of wounds received June 23, 1780 at or near Springfield, NJ.
Capt. Nathaniel Fitz Randolph was one of Woodbridge's Revolutionary War heroes, and was called "Capt. Natty" by his friends and admirers. He was captain of the Middlesex Militia, then elected naval officer of the Eastern District of New Jersey on Dec. 12, 1778. The day before his election the Council ordered that a sword should be purchased for him, as a fitting tribute to his patriotism, and this was later given to him (Styker's Rosters).
On June 24, 1778 he, with fourteen men, made an attack on the enemy's guard, opposite Elizabethport. He had returned to his home, and in January, 1779 was taken from his bed by his captors and conveyed to New York and there imprisoned and cruelly treated , until 26 May, 1780, at which time he was exchanged, it is supposed, for a Captain Jones of the British Army (Stryker's Roster). p. 48 https://njcincinnati.org/nathaniel-fitz-randolph/

Surname note
In this Fitz Randolph family, Fitz appears to have been used by all family members as part of their surname: the Oris H.F. Randolph genealogy (referenced below) assumes this to be the case when listing the children in both the family in which Nathaniel is a child and in which he is the father. The current consensus is therefore to use the surname Fitz Randolph. (Need to confirm how Fitz Randolph was used in legal documents and when births were recorded documents.) Please don't hesitate to contact the profile manager if you think this decision should be reviewed!
